BMW Service Apprentice, BMW Park Lane Battersea

Job description

To undertake maintenance, service and repair work on motor vehicles of all types to the highest standard within the scheduled times.

How did you start your career with BMW?

Researching the industry was the major factor in finding a job. I did my own research and got in touch with my local careers service, which gave me ideas to consider. I’ve always had an interest in cars but working in the automotive industry wasn’t as well publicised as other jobs. BMW provided the most information and helped me with my career research. After completing a test and an interview I was accepted into a dealership and spent 28 weeks training at BMW Academy over a two year period.

What qualifications or training do you have?

I have a BTEC National qualification in Sports Studies, in addition to 11 GCSEs.  I have now achieved a NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, IMI Technical Certificate and key skills.

Describe a typical day

My hours will usually be from 8am until 5pm, but this can vary depending on the time of year. I can spend a long time doing a major service on an old car or work on five or six cars in one day, depending on what comes in. There is no typical day. Even though I have completed my apprenticeship, I am doing further training to continue to learn my trade.  I also spend time at the BMW Academy.

What do you find most rewarding about your job?

Getting the job done is rewarding, even if it takes a while. After spending time fixing a car properly and getting to know the procedures, it's really satisfying to see yourself developing and improving your skills.

What are the personal attributes that are required to be successful in your job?

You need to be focussed and determined. Having a strong interest in cars will enable you to get the most out of the job; keeping your knowledge up to date is vital as cars are getting more and more advanced.
