Tim Cornish
Learning Quality Manager, Career Programmes,
BMW Group Academy, BMW (UK) Ltd
Job description
To ensure that the quality of all Career Programmes exceeds stakeholder expectations.
What are the main responsibilities in your job?
As a Learning Quality Manager for Career Programmes, I am responsible for the systems that we use to measure the effectiveness and quality of the training we provide at BMW Group Academy. A typical day could involve undertaking lesson observations, assessing and documenting processes and carrying out benchmarking activities. As a general rule I probably spend half of my time at a computer, half in meetings.
Did you always know you wanted to work in the motor industry?
Yes! I have always been fascinated by cars.
Is there one factor that has been instrumental in succeeding in your career?
Having a wide range of experience. After completing my A Levels I undertook a technical apprenticeship with a dealership before working as a BMW Technician at the Dick Lovett dealership in Bristol, gaining my HNC and HND at college. Following this I moved into education, working as a lecturer, training programme manager, curriculum manager and a trainer at BMW. Experience, both of the technical side of the motor industry and the theory of education, has been invaluable.
What do you think are the personal attributes required for your job?
Creativity, enthusiasm and motivation.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to work in the automotive industry?
Make sure you enjoy it - the motor industry covers a wide range of specialities so there are lots of areas in which you can develop if you keep an open mind.
Be enthusiastic and committed; never give up or stop learning. If you always strive to produce your highest quality of work, whether that is in school, in your career or when applying for jobs, it will open a lot of doors.
