About Formula BMW
Formula BMW recognises that talent needs nurturing and this involves training young drivers through the comprehensive Formula BMW Education and Coaching Programme, about all the fundamentals essential to a modern-day motor racing career. The Programme teaches; driving techniques, tactics, chassis setup, fitness training, nutrition, media training and sponsorship. Safety is a key aspect of the programme and is emphasised throughout.
The official racing car is the Formula BMW FB02 and weighs 455 kilograms. It is a single seater (monocoque) racing car powered by a 4-cylinder 140 bhp motorcycle engine taken from the K1200RS. It has a top speed of 230 km/h at more than 9,000 rpm and accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in less than 4 seconds. The car measures 3.975 metres in length, 1.74 metres wide and 0.98 metres high.
The Formula BMW UK Championship is organised and administered by the British Automobile Racing Club in accordance with the General Championship Prescriptions of the Royal Automobile Club Motor Sports Association. Drivers must hold the correct licences and follow specific Championship rules. These regulations help to ensure that all participants compete against each other on equal terms with identical equipment and in a fair environment, with no one driver gaining advantage through financial or technical means.
Races are held at different circuits throughout the regions. The race is judged by the pure skill and tactical capability of the drivers. The winner truly wins on talent, not on having the best engineer or car.
A Series Coach is present throughout the training programme, at official drivers' briefings, free practice, qualifying sessions, debriefs and all race events. This role is to provide the young drivers with their expertise and racing knowledge. By analysing driving style, watching at important positions along the circuit, evaluating results from sessions, interpreting recorded data, teaching tactics, highlighting and correcting errors and mistakes, pointing out rules and regulations, they help to improve the young drivers' skills throughout the training.
