Crossing the Road

Crossing the road can be very dangerous... for everybody.

Younger children are particularly vulnerable as they have not fully developed their skills of judging vehicles' speed and distance.

What you can do to help your child... Teach them the Crossing Code.

  1. Find a safe place to cross (like pedestrian crossings or, if there are no crossings near, a place where they can see clearly for the traffic and drivers can see them).

  2. Always stop first at the kerb (or the edge of the road if there is no pavement).

  3. Look and listen carefully for traffic all round (remember traffic can be hidden or appear from driveways etc.)

  4. When there is no traffic near, walk straight across to the other side. Keep looking and listening for traffic as you cross.
